South of Hobart is locatedBruny island, which we could consider as the island, of an island, of an island. Under its waters an immense underwater world extends and on its land a rich collection of wildlife. But also of cliffs that remove the hiccups and very long white sand beaches. It also offers the occasional surprise as the viewpoint of The Neck. If you have time we advise you to spend a night at the campsite and enjoy the wonders of this island of Tasmania. We tell you more below:

These are the main data of the route:

  • Point: Russell Falls
  • Final point: The Neck (Bruny Island)
  • Total km: 226 km

Luckily the sheep are not like roosters, they start singing when the sun rises, because when we realized when we woke up we were surrounded by them! From the parking lot they are only a few kilometers to the Russell Fall. We arrived there even before they opened the information desk, but we arrived even before the Chinese groups! We are on fire!

The Russells Falls were, without a doubt, the most beautiful waterfalls we saw in the whole trip through Tasmania. The fall is not very high, nor the amount of water is large, but they are beautiful. They are divided into several levels and the effect is cool, along with the environment, in one of those thick forests of towering trees.

We are close to closing our circuit in Tasmania. Hobart was the starting point and here we will return today, but not to stay but to continue on our way to Bruny island. This island, in the form of 8, is a perfect getaway for the inhabitants of the capital of Tasmania, and on Holy Saturday more! So you can imagine that we were not the only ones in the queue to get on the Ferry.

The Ferry leaves from Kettering and costs 33AUS (38AUS in peak season, that is, for one day we got the expensive fare). The price is per vehicle up to 6 meters long (vans like ours, the Hitop, are only 5, so cool), and includes the round trip open. The journey takes about 15 or 20 minutes and you should not be able to get out of the car, although who resists the view from the bow?

Without almost realizing it we were already driving on the roads of Bruny Island and, guess? They are not different from the rest of the country. So to travel the last 18 km to the lighthouse, at the southernmost tip, the road is a dirt track. To be honest, it is not in bad condition, but the fuck put a little bit of asphalt here copón!

When we were already regretting and considering turning around we began to see at our sides how, among the undergrowth, we can see the first panoramic views. Come on, a little more, total the van is already full of shit and wash you have to wash it ...

The Bruny Island Lighthouse It is one of the most perfect we have ever seen: white, imposing, in a spectacular setting, surrounded by cliffs and low shrubs. In the end it was worth it. And look, I just read that it is the second oldest and largest in Australia.

But this view is not the most famous on the island, right in its middle there is a narrow called “The neck”Which divides the island into two parts. Long, but totally different beaches extend to each side of this neck: the west-side beach is an impressive almost infinite line of white sand, facing an ocean enraged with green dyes. On the contrary on the east side what we find is a peaceful bay, with low tide and irregular sacks.

And in half the lookout. You have to climb a few steps to its highest part, but the scene shown under your feet is sublime! The 360 degree views over the island and with Tasmania in the background is priceless!

3 or 4 km away there is the Reserve Camping Area (10AUS per car) highly recommended. We wanted to get to a campsite soon, these days in Tasmania we have arrived almost at dusk to the sites and it has given us time to enjoy the life of a caravan. Today we can afford to cook quietly, sit down to read a book or walk along the beach.

And what a beach! It's what we called the west side. It's at the bark of the campsite and you can't miss it at sunset! We fell in love! A good gold brooch to finish off the visit to Tasmania.
